Amatsu-Mikaboshi, meaning the "August Star of Heaven" is the god of evil and of the stars, specifically the pole star in Japanese mythology.
The exact details and characterizations of Amatsu-Mikaboshi are very cloudy or unclear, as he (or it) is rarely if ever mentioned in any of the typically referenced texts of East Asian Mythology.
From what can be gleaned and pieced together from ancient Japanese myths, Mikaboshi is not a physical god in the sense like Amaterasu or Susanoo, but a dark Force that existed before the universe, reigning alone in absolute darkness and control. This, however, proved to be untrue in a sense as Mikaboshi was in fact a fragment of the primordial Khaos that existed before the universe and not being the chaos itself.
Amatsu-Mikaboshi is a force of absolute domination that feeds off of human emotions that, if left unchecked, result in social, emotional, or physical destruction. For instance, a desire for success can lead to greed and lust for power, which is the result of the influence of Mikaboshi's residue. Love for another can lead to obsession or jealousy, also result of its dark influences. In later centuries, certain creatures that are by nature dark or demonic were said to be connected to Mikaboshi in a sort of slave relationship to its power.
Souls that died with strong attachments and came back to hurt the living were said to have become physical agents to Amatsu-Mikaboshi's force in a more direct way than simple greed or lust when living, and such creatures as oni, Ama-no-Jaku, and demons were also results of certain natural elements falling prey to passions fed by Mikaboshi's temptations. The ultimate goal, it is said, was to absolutely destroy everything by dissolving it back into chaos, whereby the static, controlling power of Mikaboshi could return.
The true appearance of Amatsu-Mikaboshi is largely unknown, being almost always perceived as a kind of dark liquid that expands indefinitely throughout creation, some say it looks like oil. It usually manifests as a humanoid figure made of thick smoke with red eyes or as a thin, gray, hair-protruding entity with sharp teeth and giant claws attached to its fingers.
Despite most of Mikaboshi personality is unknown, given to his status as a evil deity, he seems to represent a darker aspect of Khaos. He is amoral and dark force rather than living beings which brings darkness and destruction with him and seeks to destroy everything to return all back into a chaos. He is reponsible for suffering of many people as he feeds on their emotions which causes a dark drawback on them depending on emotion he devour. Mikaboshi is also arrogant and have no concern of others or Creation as such, calling archangels which challenged him as a arrogant birds before he deal with them.
Despite his evil deeds, Amatsu-Mikaboshi seems to have softer side to deities he created and their offsprings especially then Amaterasu as he kindly tell her purpose of darkness which he claims was beggining for everything.
Powers and Abilities
- Nigh-Omnipotence: As an avatar of the primeval void Khaos, Mikaboshi possesses a massive amount of power rivalling or even surpassing Chronos himself with Calur himself stating that he might be the only primordial that is the closest to Khaos much like Jesus is to god. He was able to fight with Calur with the Arcutha acknowledged that Mikaboshi is formidable opponent even for him.
- Void Embodiment: Being an avatar of Khaos, Mikaboshi is basically the primeval void on a lesser scale and his power is said to be at it's peak there possibly surpassing even Jesus. Given to his connection to void also grands him potential to only grow stronger.
- Primordial Darkness Manipulation: Like Khaos, he can control the primordial darkness that existed before creation and represents the darker aspect of primordial creation alongside the Light, both being two halves of the same coin but remaining opposite. Due to its primordial nature, it goes beyond the concepts of good, evil and even neutrality.
The Big Bang occurred with the clashing of God and the other Pre-existentials. After the defeat of the darkness, threads of itself scattered about and managed to slip by God and his angels undetected. One of these fragments came to be known as Amatsu-Mikaboshi. Mikaboshi attempted to regain the darkness but in one brief instance the iron control of the Dark Force, it was shattered by the movement of In and Yo, which brought forth the completion of the universe and the active chaos of life and movement, which later became the gods and humanity.
Even though solidity of the primordial darkness had been destroyed, its residue still lingered on in the hearts of all beings and is allegedly the cause of human passions. The idea of Amatsu-Mikaboshi as the god of evil is slightly a misnomer, however, as Mikaboshi is not a Japanese "Satan" or anything of the sort. It originated as an antithesis to the positive forces of life in Shinto, thus its lack of a singular form means.
Myths and Legends
In Japanese mythology, Ama-tsu-mika-boshi (天津甕星, "Dread Star of Heaven", "August Star of Heaven"), also called Ame-no-kagase-o (天香香背男, "Scarecrow Male of Heaven", "Brilliant Male"), was originally a malevolent Shinto god.
Under Chinese Buddhist influence, the god was identified with Myōken either as the pole star or Venus, before being combined with the god of all stars, Ama-no-mi-naka-nushi (天之御中主神, "Divine Lord of the middle heavens").
In some versions he was born from Kagutsuchi's blood. He is mentioned in passing in the Nihon Shoki as being subdued by Takemikazuchi during the latter's conquest of the land of Izumo, and is sometimes identified with the figure of Takeminakata in the Kojiki.
