A Cambion (Art by Russian-Standard)

Cambion is a "broad" term, so to speak, when it comes to half-demon beings. Think of it like biology in some way. Cambion is a genus within the Demon family, and is consisted of many different species of half-demons, like Imps or Gowthers or Tieflings, etc. I am one of those species, Black. I'm a warlock.
Matt Wright.

Cambions are the half-breed offspring of demons and non-demons.

A cambion is usually devilishly cunning, and angelically beautiful, able to persuade even the most strong-hearted individual to do his or her bidding. Most cambions have demonic tendencies due to their demon parents. Cambions are said to be able to surpass their parents in power and strength, due to being a unique breed of demonic beings.

In medieval legend, it was said that a cambion was the half-human offspring of the union between a human male and a succubus, or of an incubus and a human female though in the modern age, it can be with a demon and a non-demon (being it human, deity or any other non-demon). The non-human offspring from whom they believe inherits it's supernatural powers and abilities.

Cambions are different from their other half-demon relatives. They are often spoiled by their adoring or enchanted parents. Even a strong willed person will bend to the supernatural charisma of a cambion. Because of these dominating urges, many cambions can be controlling and manipulative.

When the cambion is a stillborn, they shows no sign of life outside of being alive, meaning that the child has no pulse and no breath. This continues until the child is about seven years old, where it becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate one from a human. Due to its inability to create or nurture life, the method of the creation of a cambion is necessarily protracted.

One exception to this rule was likely the cambion known as Hellboy, who was born in Hell instead of Earth, looking more demonic than most others, having red skin, horns and hooves. Due being christened by agents of Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, his demonic nature was also greatly diminished.

A cambion is often seen as a beautiful human, nearly supernaturally attractive, taking after their infernal parent. Overtime though, their personality soon begins to carve their true appearance, one that nearly resembles their parent. Cambions are said to surpass their parents in power and strength, due to being a unique breed of demonic beings.

Myths and Legends

In its earliest known uses, it was related to the word for change and was probably cognate with changeling. Since at least the 19th century, it has referred to the offspring of a demon with a human.

The influential Malleus Maleficarum states that demons, including the incubus and the succubus, are incapable of reproduction. Because of this inability to create or nurture life, the method of the creation of a cambion is necessarily protracted. A succubus will have sexual relations with a human male and so acquire a sample of his sperm. This she will then pass on to an incubus, who then corrupts and strengthens the seed. The incubus will, in his turn, transfer this sperm to a human female and thus impregnate her.

Notable Cambions

  • Merlin - One of the greatest magicians in the human realm, offspring of a nun and the demonic king Belial
  • Hellboy - Offspring of the watcher Azazel and a human woman, Sarah Hughes
  • Dante
  • Vergil
  • Nero - Vergil's son and Sparda's grandson

A cambion is undoubtedly powerful. They are destined to be one day become greater than their father. Because of that, they are precious. Because of that, they are dangerous.

  • The children of demons and angels are not cambions nor are Nephilim but instead a brand new race called Nephalem, despised by both.
  • The Malleus Maleficarum never uses the word cambion, referring to the children of incubi as campsores or wechselkinder (the German term for changelings).
  • Many demon lords are fond of procreating with other races who have made pacts with demons, and so had sired cambions who help them sow chaos across Creation.
