Freyja was different from her father and brother, though. Beautiful and gentle, yet there was something wicked behind those red-gold eyes of her. Bloodlust. Death. Both of which were too familiar with Odin.

Freyja, sometimes called Freya, is the Norse goddess of love, sex, beauty, fertility, gold, seidr, war, and death and the twin sister of Freyr.

Overview[]

Freyja is a pre-eminent goddess that is a member of the Vanir tribe of deities, but became an honorary member of the Aesir after the Aesir-Vanir War. Freyja is famous for her fondness of love, fertility, beauty, and also war, and death.

Freyja has the necklace Brísingamen in her possession. She drives a chariot pulled by two cats, is often seen with Hildisvíni, her pet boar, and wears a cloak made of falcon feathers.

Freyja is also the mother of Hnoss and Gersemi through her marriage with Odr.

As the goddess of death and war, Freyja leads the Valkryies. She claims half of the souls of those who died in battle and take them to Fólkvangr while Odin claims the other half and brings them to Valhalla.

Freyja comforts the souls of warriors who died nobly on the battlefield and guides them to Fólkvangr, where they will spend all their time until Ragnarok in peace and happiness.

Appearance[]

Freyja is known for her extravagant beauty among the Norse gods, described as having long blonde hair and pretty blue eyes.

Personality[]

Freya has a great appreciation for romantic music and floral arrangements. She can be sweet and generous, inviting the wives and lovers of the warriors that reside in her hall to live with them. However, as the goddess of war and death, she is a formidable opponent on the battlefield and a great warrior.

Freya is also flirtatious, loving to tease, and has an unending appetite for talented warriors.

Trivia[]

  • When Freyja and her Valkryies charge into battle, the lights on their armour are sometimes said to create a display of lights that humans have come to mistake for the Aurora Borealis as they are uncannily similar.
