Gods and Demons Wiki

Run? From you? You forget yourself, worm... no, you sapient speck of dust. I am not some wayward demon who cowers in the face of gods. I am the emissary of the Outer Gods, messenger of Azathoth, OF CHAOS ITSELF! I am the very SOUL of the void that existed before there ever was. And after I am done... you will only wish that I was a demon.
Nyarlathotep.

Nyarlathotep, known by his many epithets, is an ancient cosmic being known as an Outer God in the Lovecraftian mythos. He is the spawn of Azathoth.

Overview

Nyarlathotep is a cosmic being that is said to be far older than the Great Old One Cthulhu himself. This is due to the fact that Nyarlathotep is a member of the Outer Gods, a race of ancient eldritch monstrous creatures that predate the current universe and formed amidst the chaos that wandered the primordial nothingness. He has "a thousand" other forms and manifestations, most reputed to be quite horrific and sanity-blasting. While most, if not many, of the Outer Gods are inactive and incapable of human understanding, Nyarlathotep differs from them.

Unlike the majority of his race, Nyarlathotep is active and is tasked with wreaking havoc across the cosmos, and most notably Earth in particular. His goal is to sow despair and woe wherever he treads, thereby spreading the chaos that he was born from and to engulf the light of God in his darkness. While he claims to be a simple messenger, his actions are incredibly destructive and heinous to be looked upon as one through human perception.

Nyarlathotep is also said to be the most "human" of the Outer Gods. This is due to him assuming many human forms over the centuries he has been on Earth. This also aids him in throwing society in shambles, turning many people against each other, inciting wars and battles, revolutions, and so forth. He is known to perform this through the use of corrupt propaganda, deception, and manipulation. Because of this, Nyarlathotep is considered to be the most 'human' of the Outer Gods due to his ability to walk freely among the mortals, thus, it makes him the most terrible of the Old Ones.

Most of the Outer Gods have their own cults serving them; Nyarlathotep seems to serve as He serves several cults and takes care of their affairs in the other Outer Gods' absence. Most Outer Gods use strange alien languages, while Nyarlathotep uses human languages and can easily pass for a human being if he chooses to do so. Finally, most of them are all-powerful yet evidently without clear purpose or agenda, yet Nyarlathotep seems to be deliberately deceptive and manipulative, and even uses propaganda to achieve his goals.

Nyarlathotep enacts the will of Azathoth, and is its messenger, heart and soul; he is also a messenger of the other Outer Gods, whose wishes he immediately fulfills and the one member of the who deals on a personal level with human beings in general. Unlike the other Outer Gods, causing and spreading madness is more important and enjoyable than death and destruction to Nyarlathotep. It is suggested by some that he will destroy the human race and possibly the earth as well. He is described as the very soul of "gigantic, tenebrous, ultimate gods – the blind, voiceless, mindless gargoyles". As such, his evil is absolute, for he is not only the servant of these creatures, but their very consciousness. He is known as the soul of darkness, comparable to many dark and evil entities known to man. Nyarlathotep is believed to be more powerful then the majority of the Old Ones themselves, likely due to him being an Outer God.

While he does possess numerous followers, Nyarlathotep is believed to have even spawned children known as the Million Favored Ones. Their number is obviously implied in the epithet. His children are said to be as depraved and as manipulative as he is, to the point where they would even have cults of their own and gather a collective number of people to either join them or perform a sacrifice of sorts for their benefit or, mostly, their father. But in the end, the Million Favored Ones would always follow the orders of Nyarlathotep without question as he would use them to further his agendas.

Appearance

Nyarlathotep, however, is active and frequently walks the Earth in the guise of a human being, usually a tall, slim, joyous man. He has "a thousand" other forms and manifestations, most reputed to be quite horrific and sanity-blasting.

Nyarlathotep has also assumed the forms of other creatures and beings, and thus causing many cultures around the world to worship and revere this particular form as a separate entity or deity. In the process, it taints and damns the religion of God. But like his race, his true form is unspeakably dreadful, and would render any being in close proximity or even from afar into a pile of blob-like nothing. This shows that Nyarlathotep must take a form that is compatible with the laws of our reality.

Personality

Unlike the majority of his race, Nyarlathotep is active and is tasked with wreaking havoc across the cosmos, and most notably Earth in particular. His goal is to sow despair and woe wherever he treads, thereby spreading the chaos that he was born from and to engulf the light of God in his darkness. While he claims to be a simple messenger, his actions are incredibly destructive and heinous to be looked upon as one through human perception. To him, causing and spreading madness is more important and enjoyable than simple death and destruction. It is suggested by some that he will destroy the human race and possibly the earth as well.

Lucifer himself openly admitted that Nyarlathotep is far worse than a demon, and his nature would make a demon seem benevolent. He assisted in the revival of the Primordial Angra Mainyu and with that, they have a close friendly relationship with each other. However, even if he one of the malevolent entities in Creation, there was one little human girl that he had a strange fondness for and with that made a promise, "I will not harm anyone that does not deserve it" though this promise had many loopholes he could abuse.

Despite his seemingly terrifying and cunning disposition as an all-powerful Old One, Azathoth claims that he is still immature, impatient, and flawed by his arrogance because of his overwhelming pride and ego. As he (Azathoth) states that if he recklessly challenge and wage war against God and the Heavens, it will be his greatest downfall in the end. So much that he once warned Nyarlathotep (when he arrogantly states he will storm the Heavens) to never ever recklessly challenge or belittles God and His supreme status as the "Supreme Being of the Multiverse". And if he does, God will only swat him like fly. This is clearly seen when he angered Khaos and got completely obliterated, only to return thanks to Azathoth, and later annihilated by Calur, after accidentally, being in his presence.

Power and Abilities

Symbol of Nyarlathotep.

While nowhere near as powerful as his creator Azathoth, nor the cosmic entity Yog-Sothoth, he remains to be an Outer God and as such Nyarlothotep is immortal and incredibly powerful while also being highly complex to be understood. It is believed that Nyarlathotep is able to control mystic energies of the cosmos to varying effects at an undefined level, both cosmic and demonic as well. He is able to manifest as a vast multitude of avatars. While the god's near-boundless intelligence is behind all of them, each avatar varies greatly in appearance, power, and purpose.

Some avatars are even worshiped as their own beings, the followers unaware that it is merely part of a much greater being. He is also capable of shapeshifting and can take the form of a human man. Like Cthulhu, his mere presence induces madness and insanity to mortals such as humans and can communicate with them via telepathy. He is also able to freely travel across every plane of existence and exists beyond the "archetypal infinity".

He far surpasses the True Archangels Michael, Metatron and Merkabah along with the Archdemons Lilith, Beelzebub and even Lucifer. It is believed that only a full-powered Satan, the strongest archdemon of Hell, can rival or perhaps even superior than him. For he and Satan battled for days, and due to his unpreparedness and Satan's near-omnipotent power, he is force to retreat in the darkness of the Universe. He is also not powerful enough to even battle an elder Primordial Entities, that came into existence before him

Quotes

And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished, for the small hours were rent with the screams of nightmare.
H.P. Lovecraft about Nyarlathotep
And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of the old native blood and looked like a Pharaoh. The fellahin knelt when they saw him, yet could not say why. He said he had risen up out of the blackness of twenty-seven centuries, and that he had heard messages from places not on this planet. Into the lands of civilisation came Nyarlathotep, swarthy, slender, and sinister, always buying strange instruments of glass and metal and combining them into instruments yet stranger. He spoke much of the sciences – of electricity and psychology –and gave exhibitions of power which sent his spectators away speechless, yet which swelled his fame to exceeding magnitude. Men advised one another to see Nyarlathotep, and shuddered. And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished; for the small hours were rent with the screams of a nightmare.
H.P. Lovecraft about Nyarlathotep.
And through this revolting graveyard of the universe the muffled, maddening beating of drums, and thin, monotonous whine of blasphemous flutes from inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond Time; the detestable pounding and piping whereunto dance slowly, awkwardly, and absurdly the gigantic, tenebrous ultimate gods — the blind, voiceless, mindless gargoyles whose soul is Nyarlathotep.
H.P. Lovecraft about Nyarlathotep.
It was the eldritch scurrying of those fiend-born rats, always questing for new horrors, and determined to lead me on even unto those grinning caverns of earth's centre where Nyarlathotep, the mad faceless god, howls blindly to the piping of two amorphous idiot flute-players.
The Rats in the Walls.
What his fate would be, he did not know; but he felt that he was held for the coming of that frightful soul and messenger of infinity's Other Gods, the crawling chaos Nyarlathotep.

There was the immemorial figure of the deputy or messenger of hidden and terrible powers; the "Black Man" of the witch cult, and the "Nyarlathotep" of the Necronomicon.

It would be far too easy to destroy you all. But I won't. Why? Because you all provide me far too much entertainment and I could never be dissatisfied! So, you need not worry. I will continue on with this game. And you will NEVER see me coming.

Hm? It seems like, in this world, bending reality is not endemic to the Gods... How FASCINATING! How truly CHAOTIC! No wonder your Beast destroyed it when anyone can defy its rules!
Nyarlathotep about a human performing magic
I ran into a guy at the club last night. He claimed to be Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos and High-Prince of the Outer Gods. He said something about wanting to find a "mate" among humans to bear him his child and finally begin the destruction of this world for the sake of chaos. Judging from the amount of cocain he was snorting, I doubt that's the case.

Chronos?! So he felt my energy from whatever he was. Well, I can't fight him with now unless I wished to get slammed through entire universes. Unfortunately, I have to leave our conflict human but don't worry. We will meet again.

Trivia

  • Nyarlathotep has been seen as the Devil in Lovecraftian literature as Satan is in Christian literature.
  • He is one of the only beings to have even angered Khaos, something not even God has done.
  • He had made a deal with the Mi-Go at one point, possibly for information on Prof. Wilmarth.
  • Tartarus is particularly mad at Nyarlathotep for escaping his realm from punishment
  • Nyarlathotep has said that he is the most wary of the Amatsu-Mikaboshi among all primordials.
  • It is said that he was baptized with the name "Nyarlathotep". The reason for this is because your real name cannot be pronounced or understood by humans. In fact, Nyarlanthotep mentions that if he revealed his real name to a human "his mind wouldn't be able to handle it".
  • He is also believed to be the creator of the monster specie known as shapeshifters. He didn't confirm anything, but several hunters described the shapeshifters as a "creeping chaos" and some who saw their true forms went mad, describing them as a "faceless existence".
    • Furthermore, some shapeshifters have already said that they, like humans, have a God, a "faceless God".
  • Befitting its true nature, Nyarlathotep is shown to like reading books of Lovecraftian-like horror.
  • Although Nyarlathotep is often said to be an obedient son of Azathoth, in reality, Nyarlathotep despises and deeply hates Azathoth, not caring about him even if the God himself killed him. The reason Nyarlathotep follows the Nuclear Sultan's orders is only out of fearful submission from his father.
  • Nyarlathotep is interpreted to be the Eldritch equivalent of Jesus Christ, due to his role as the son of Azathoth, the Lovecraftian counterpart of God. He is also identified as the equivalent of Satan or Gabriel, with the latter being in relation to him being the Messenger of Azathoth.
    • While Nyarlathotep is interpreted as the equivalent of Gabriel, his wife, Yhoundeh is interpreted as the equivalent of Mary of Nazareth, which in itself is considered blasphemy.
