Gods and Demons Wiki

Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, arts, learning, speech and the Saraswati river in Hinduism. She is part of the trinity of Devis called the Tridevi alongside Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, prosperity and Parvati, the goddess of motherly love, marriage, might, children and fertility.

She is a very popular goddess among students and teachers since they pray to her for knowledge and success in academics. She exists in three different forms-speech on our tongue, the Saraswati river and the goddess herself. Her mount is the divine goose Hamsa.

She is depicted as a very beautiful goddess, dressed in pure white and seated on a lotus. She has four hands, each hand holding a book, a rosary of beads symbolizing time, a water pot symbolizing purity and essence and a musical instrument called the Veena that represents creativity and art. She is adorned with shining and beautiful ornaments and is accompanied by her pet Hamsa, sometimes even a Mayura or peacock.

Being one of the Second-Generation Primordial Deities, Saraswati is a goddess who represents the thought process, knowledge and creativity of man. She is ardently worshipped by students and teachers since knowledge plays a very important role in one's life. She is very benevolent and assists Brahma in the onerous tasking of creating the universe. She is the one who gave Brahma the essence of the Vedas and other branches of knowledge to Brahma. She hates it when atrocities are committed against virtuous souls and she holds senseless wars, chaos as contemptible. She also steps up to the occasion, often involving herself directly as in the legend where she had to transform into the sacred Saraswati river to save the world when the great world-destroying fire named Vadavagni erupted during a battle between the Bhargavas, a group of Brahmins and the Hehayas, a group of Kshatriyas.

Saraswati is divinely wise, showing great insights to people, and knowledgeable when it comes to mythological things and events like the War in Heaven. She is well respected for her compassion and merciful nature, but can be a strict adherent towards the celestial laws, decreed by God.She is merciful, but disrespect towards her could mean the loss of knowledge from the world and universe.
