We meet again, young one. I am of those who gave you shape and breath and form, long before this Universe ever existed. I am the one that you and your brothers and sisters rose up against and unjustly sealed away. I am the Darkness... and my answer is at hand.
The Darkness to Samael.

The Darkness is a supremely powerful cosmic entity that is embodiment of the infinite darkness that predates creation itself, at the same as both her 'brother' God and the primordial void Khaos. She is also the creator of the Beast from the sea and earth using the remains of Therion.

Overview

The Darkness' True Form

She is perhaps one of the most powerful beings to ever exist in the world, outclassing her fellow Primordial Powers, with the only exception to her might possibly being God, Khaos, and Azathoth.

Due to her imprisonment, The Darkness had no knowledge or understanding of how God's universe worked. However, after feeding on various souls and studying important points in human history, she finally came to the conclusion that her brother had "messed up" when she made the world, saying that Heaven, Hell, good, evil, and even people seemed unimportant. When she was first released, she intended to remake the world as she saw fit: a world where nobody had to suffer, and instead lived blissfully for eternity. However, she also wanted to destroy everything that her brother had created to make him suffer.

Whilst the True Archangels knew of her existence, she is so ancient and mysterious that even most demons and angels, except for Metatron, didn't believe she existed or was locked away. However, Metatron knew about her and who she was, as he was God's scribe. Both Heaven and Hell thought it to be a "myth" or "scary bedtime story", told to keep others in line.

The Darkness is disconnected from all things in reality, she is a vastness of night, with no light. The Darkness also has the form of existence that is beyond any level of the "event" concept. Nevertheless, she was what made Creation possible and with her partner, made the function of reality come to life.

Appearance

In her true form, The Darkness is a blob of living, sentient darkness, torn from the primal fabric of the cosmos. She is distinguishable in darkness only as a vaguely shimmering oily pitch.

In her human form, she appears as a woman with fair skin in a black dress. Her hair has been shown to be both dark brown and black with a white streak.

Personality

Have you understood the vast expanse of the earth? Tell me, if you know all of this. In which direction does the light reside? And where is the place of darkness?
Book of Job 38: 18-19, NWT.

Due to her imprisonment via thousands of mystical seals, The Darkness initially had no idea of how God's universe worked. After talking to a variety of humans and doing his own research, she came to the conclusion that God's world was ultimately flawed, that Heaven, Hell, humans, and everything else that had burst forth from God's act of Creation were broken. Henceforth, she attempted to remake the world in her image. However, before she did so, she felt she had to wage war upon God. Therefore, instead of simply ending the Universe and making it anew, The Darkness began to destroy the world, piecemeal, to attract what she saw as God's attention towards her.

She originally was just as destructive as her sister Ayin, but after she "grew up" she was finally able to admit she was wrong and became less violent. However she still thinks that God is the same petulant, narcissistic being he always was yet still respect her older brother's power and authority and love Him, more so than her elder sister Ayin, while she has changed and adapted into the "better her".

The Darkness is a wise and intelligent woman who can be playful at times but behaves according to the situation. She cares deeply for Khaos, one of the beings to care about her in the beginning, worried about his welfare. She is also a determined and stubborn person, forcing herself through all her mental obstacles and not listening anyone.

Powers and Abilities

Yeah, first time it took the combined strength of me and my brothers to weaken the Darkness before Father finished her off.
Calur.

The Darkness is shown to be one of the most powerful entities in existence. In several instances, God stated that even with all Arcuthas fighting against her the first time, while he gradually boost in power to prepare against Khaos and Azathoth, victory was barely achieved. Even Death, a primordial being similarly old as her brother and close to him in strength, showed to be very wary of her despite being one of the few beings capable rivaling her older and stronger sister Ayin. The Darkness was powerful enough for her mere release to damage Lucifer's Cage, a prison designed to imprison Lucifer. Even after withstanding a combined but sequential attack by powerful supernatural beings (witches, every angel in Heaven, demons, and Lucifer), she still proved to be stronger than Lucifer when she stopped him and fatally wounded him, all before regenerating fully and walking away. Not long after, upon reconciling with God, the Darkness was able to heal the fatal damage her omnipotent powers did to him, without any difficulty.

  • Nigh-Omnipotence - Castiel describes the Darkness' power level as near infinite, and she describes herself as more powerful than any being that they have faced. She is even superior to most of her siblings and only exceeded and surpassed only by God, Khaos, Azathoth, and her elder sister Ayin yet still proven herself to be able to rival them to some degree. In fact, she is so powerful that her brother couldn't defeat her without the Arcuthas, and their combined power was barely enough to seal her away, by tricking her first. Even weakened after a combined attack from witches, demons, angels, and Lucifer, she managed to overpower and fatally wound God (in some degree), as well as overpower and rip Lucifer from Castiel's body. God further elaborated that while He can create and destroy universes only the Darkness can bring true destruction, in a lesser way than Khaos and Azathoth.
  • Transcendent Immortality: The Darkness is immortal. Even the combined power of all the angels caused her no permanent harm. She was also unfazed by Lucifer. However it's been stated that she can die.
  • Immeasurable Strength: The Darkness was easily able to throw a grown man with enough force to kill him. The Darkness also blocked an attack from Castiel with ease and threw him several feet away with barely touching him. When attacking God, the Darkness was able to easily strangle him one handed even after being severely weakened by a sequential attack from witches, angels and demons, yet it was because God doesn't want to hurt her or He is just holding back His power.
    • Nigh-Invulnerability: Considering her ability to stand against God and his Arcuthas, the Darkness has immense resilience to physical and supernatural attacks. God himself was only able to speculate about what might be able to kill her.
      • Absolute Endurance: She has displayed significant tolerance for extreme physical and psychological trauma. This was seen when, despite the combined massive attacks from Rowena and other witches, demons, angels and Lucifer, she was still able to move and walk up to God, and, upon facing the possibility of being trapped once again, was able to overcome her own weakness and continue fighting God for some time.
    • Nigh-Absolute Regeneration - The Darkness has shown a healing factor. When she was wounded by a massive angelic smite, she absorbed an Angel's grace and took help from Rowena in order to restore her powers. However, after being significantly weakened by a massive angelic smite, full scale demonic attack, Crowley attacking, and Lucifer's Spear, she regenerated only minutes afterward
  • Absorption - The Darkness is able to absorb energy attacks. She was able to absorb the combined smiting of all angels, although it weakened her to a certain degree. The attack was supposed to destroy a large area instead it only formed a crater. Later, she absorbed an attack from Lucifer, this time without taking any injuries.
  • Reality Warping - While she conversed with Dean, her smoke form was still expanding, causing immense winds. However, they were completely unaffected by them, indicating that she has tremendous control over the physical Universe. Her power was evident when she turned a water fountain into blood. She is able to destroy all of God's creation and even Magic itself. Prior to the creation of the current universe, she destroyed multiple worlds God created. She was also able to create matter out of nothing as she could restore a human's body to its original state thirty years ago, in spite of it being destroyed by Azazel.
  • Umbrakinesis - As a Pre-existential incarnation and original darkness itself, the Darkness, has the ability to summon and control clouds of darkness for various purposes. The Darkness was able to use this to create tentacles of darkness to attack and fatally wound God to the point that only she could heal him. On another occasion, the Darkness gathered all of the darkness surrounding her into her being and fired it into Heaven in the form of a shockwave as a demonstration of her power. Due to being the primeval darkness on her own, her power over her far exceeds that of Erebus and Nyx, but is below her older sister.
  • Weather Manipulation - As the Darkness expanded on Earth, she caused powerful winds. She also created a deadly storm with her mind that burned people to charred skeletons. When the Darkness fired a shockwave of darkness into Heaven, storm clouds formed on Earth with lightning flashing throughout them violently.
  • Angelic Exorcism - The Darkness was able to pull Lucifer from Castiel's body. While Lucifer survived, the exorcism left him severely weakened.
  • Clairsentience - The Darkness instantly detected the soul bomb embedded within Dean and mocked him for thinking that she wouldn't be able to notice it. The Darkness was able to trace the energy emanating from God's wound and deduced that he wasn't in full strength. The Darkness stated that she could feel how God has been destroying all Alternate Universes despite her being still sealed away.
  • Conjuration - She is said to be able to create a whole new reality in which everyone lives blissfully forever, but Lucifer disagrees.
  • Electrokinesis - She tortured Lucifer with powerful electrokinesis that burned his face.
  • Empathy - The Darkness can feel and influence the emotions of humans. She was able to fully interpret the fear flowing through God, when he was trying to convince her to heal him.
  • Flight - The Darkness, while disembodied, can fly in a similar manner to demons and angels without a vessel.
  • Healing - After reconciling with God, the Darkness was able to heal the damage her nigh-omnipotent powers did to him, without any difficulty. God believed that she could heal the damage that was to him, but the Darkness refused to help.
  • Implosion - After an Angel failed to harm her, the Darkness imploded him into nothingness by surrounding him with darkness.
  • Localization - The Darkness can find any being in existence, as long as they're not warded against her. She was able to track Rowena after she left her side. However, God was able to ward himself specifically against her. She was also able to locate Sam and Dean easily despite them being two states away from her with her even stating she could smell them a mile.
  • Mental Projection - The Darkness was able to project an image of herself and Lucifer into Dean's mind to pass a message to God and later to ask Dean to meet with her. She was also able to project a vision of herself in her grown form surrounded by her smoke form into Dean's mind to communicate with him after her release.
  • Molecular Combustion - With a wave of her hand, the Darkness caused an angel to explode into dust.
  • Pathokinesis - The Darkness was able to cause humans to feel blissful.
  • Possession - After her release, the Darkness possessed a newborn baby, Amara.
  • Power Negation - With a wave of her hand, the Darkness was able to negate Lucifer's hold over the Winchesters. She also was able to render Lucifer completely powerless against her with ease. The Darkness has shown the ability to negate God's ability to teleport so that he couldn't leave the bunker. However, Chuck said she couldn't keep this up forever, implying that he would eventually be able to overcome this.
  • Rapid Aging - By consuming the souls of both humans and demons, she was able to incrementally age herself until the Darkness aged from a baby into a full adult.
  • Resurrection - At one point, the Darkness resurrected a previously dead human. She was able to do this with no apparent effort despite the human being dead for over thirty years and having left no body behind.
  • Sedation - With a wave of her hand, the Darkness was able to knock Lucifer out.
  • Smiting - Just by raising her hand, the Darkness was able to kill an angel with a similar effect to an angel blade.
  • Spell Deflection - While she was briefly affected by a spell, the Darkness was able to quickly overcome and deflect the spell back at Rowena and the other four witches, killing all but Rowena instantly.
  • Soul and Grace Consumption - After she was released, the Darkness started devouring human souls in order to heal herself and restore her former power. In her human form, she ate a soul which made her grow into a little girl and later a preteen girl. She has since consumed many souls (including demon souls). It's revealed that she can also consume the grace and essence of angels, when she attempted to consume Ambriel, she drained her from inside her vessel.
  • Supernatural Concealment - While God could hide himself from the Darkness, she also was able to hide herself from God.
  • Telekinesis - In the form of Amara, the Darkness displayed telekinesis. She forced an angel to kill himself with his sword and even overpowered God and Lucifer at the same time.
  • Teleportation - The Darkness can teleport anywhere in the multiverse. She used this power in various occasions and could even teleport into the Bunker, a heavily warded location with ease. She could teleport herself alone or with others in an burst of light like she did with Lucifer who was possessing Castiel's vessel.
    • Apporting - She was able to teleport Dean out of his car without a word. Later, she apported him from a city to the countryside and back. She was also able to apport her dying brother to her. With just a snap of her fingers, the Darkness was able to teleport both herself and God to Heaven and later to the bunker, both against his will.
  • Fusionism: She can merge with her brother by entering a state of balance between light and darkness, creation and destruction, everything and nothing. Despite the great power that the fusion of the two results, in relation to God the increase in power is almost insignificant, even Ayin mentions: "brother, until recently you were much stronger than her, what power do you think you gained with this merger?". Nevertheless, this eliminates God's weakness to darkness and Amara's weakness to light.

Weaknesses

Despite her immense power, even the Darkness has weaknesses and can be sealed away or even killed.

  • Spear of Longinus - Like with the Son of God, was capable of harming her vessel to the point of her admitting defeat.
  • Witchcraft/Magic - Although being one of the most powerful beings in existence, magic is still able to affect the Darkness, as Rowena used a spell to heal her, and she combined with four other powerful witches were later able to use a powerful spell to diminish her to an extent, briefly bringing her down and burning her face and right shoulder and leaving her somewhat weakened, although Rowena's lone power proved to be completely ineffective against her and even their combined might didn't held her for long as she redirected the spell back at them, burning the four witches and rendering Rowena effectively helpless. God's magic, harnessed through a spell, was able to trap the Darkness when she was weakened, and despite retaining enough power to overpower God and Lucifer after she was weakened by the combined efforts of the demons, witches, and angels, she had to actively resist God's attempt to recast the spell and trap her rather than simply withstanding it head-on, suggesting it would have worked had she not fought back.

History

I was the beginning, and I will be the end. I will be all that there is.
The Darkness

The Darkness formed after the waters of Khaos cooled down the fiery destruction of void, allowing the Darkness to finally exist. Of the pre-existentials, most were content to float around in the emptiness of space, doing nothing. However, God was not content to sit around in the emptiness of nothing, and decided to begin Creation. They destroyed everything he made, and when God created another world they destroyed it again. And again, and again, and again.

God's patience was not infinite, and eventually he grew wroth. To accomplish his revenge against the Darkness, God waged war against the Darkness but found to his surprise that she was just as powerful as he was, no matter what he did. One day, God came up with a revolutionary idea, he would make his own warriors that would help him fight his 'sister'. And so he created the the first Arcutha known as Calur and together they wage war against the Darkness. God was eventually able to barely defeat the Darkness, and instead of killing her, God bound her with thousands of seals and locked her away, so that she would not interfere with his creations, sealing her away within the Abyss.

After that battle, God then created the rest of the Arcuthas and came to the other battle in the cosmos and so in fought against Khaos with his Primordials and Azathoth with his creations, the Outer Gods. While this battle took far longer than the previous one, God was finally able to defeat them both and had sealed both away.

God, thinking about His battles with those entities, He feared that he would become no better than them and so he separated the Prime Evil Tathamet into the Great Evils. After that battle and the corruption of the Arcuthas at the hand of Therion, he then created Heaven and the soldiers to defend it, the Angels.

And in all those billions of years while God and his Archangels ruled Heaven, fought their own wars, witnessed the fall of Lucifer who was imprisoned within Hell, a realm created by Ayin. During these events The Darkness lay there, and simmered. Simmered and raged and shouted and screamed and contemplated the reasons why she was now confined to eternal imprisonment. Her anger allowed Ayin to find where she was, and manipulated events to free her sister. Her anger also allowed the Fallen Angel Lucifer to take over Hell.

When Rowena used a spell from the Book of the Damned in order to free Dean from hell, The Darkness was unleashed once again. While on Earth, The Darkness has taken the body of a female baby, Amara. Since regaining her power by consuming human souls, she matured and grew into a young woman in just a few months.

From the moment of her release, The Darkness became infatuated by Dean, as if he'd been the one to release her. She said it was destiny that she had been released, and that they would one day become one. When they met for the first time since The Darkness "grew up" and became an adult, she kissed him passionately, saying it was "the future" and the inevitable result of their first meeting.

She has stated that she has loved God more than she could ever imagine. After getting her revenge, The Darkness began to lament her actions as, despite everything God did to her, she still loved her brother. As God and his creations began to die, The Darkness really began to see beauty in it all and admitted that along with the real reason for her actions: jealousy. The Darkness had been jealous of God for needing something else; something that was not her, but after he created life it made her consumed by rage. After releasing the jealousy and anger, The Darkness finally had what she really wanted all the time: her brother back.

Despite her beliefs, The Darkness showed the ability to admit that she is wrong and to make amends as she did with God. It seemed she had built her vengeance so much that The Darkness never considered what would happen when she succeeded. After being confronted with the reality of what she did, she understood her mistake.

When God returns three years after the end of the war with The Darkness, she tells Dean and Castiel that he and The Darkness have had a nice time reconnecting as a family. The Darkness has apparently developed a taste for playing keno now, showing that she has gained an enjoyment for at least some human things.

It's later revealed that although the two have grown closer, The Darkness remains annoyed with her brother and his refusal to change and has been taking some time away from God. She states that while she has accepted them existing together, she no longer wants to be in the same place as him and sees her brother as the same petulant, narcissistic being he always was while she has changed and adapted into the "better her".

She is said to return to help her brother during The Final Conflict, however nothing is confirmed.

Myths and Legends

Darkness, the polar opposite of brightness, is understood as a lack of illumination or an absence of visible light. Human vision is unable to distinguish color in conditions of either high brightness or very low brightness. In conditions with insufficient light levels, color perception ranges from achromatic to ultimately black. The emotional response to darkness has generated metaphorical usages of the term in many cultures. Referring to a time of day, complete darkness occurs when the Sun is more than 18° below the horizon, without the effects of twilight on the night sky.

Darkness appears where there is a absence of light, and is associated with certain religions with evil and sin or peace and knowledge. Darkness is also an element seen in fictional works, used by both heroes and villains.

In Abrahamic lore, Darkness was associated with the devil himself due to being the opposite of God, the entity of light. However, God has been compared to shade and darkness just as much as light and holy fire - case in point, He keeps His people in "the shadow of His wing" for protection. By contrast, Lucifer is known as the "Light Bringer" and the "Morning Star".

Quotes

Being Dark and being Evil are two completely different things. Though I admit, perhaps I may not be the biggest example for this arguement.
The Darkness
I was the beginning...I was the end. I am all that there it is, and all there will ever be.
The Darkness to Michael.
Before the light, I was infinite, I had no name, no need for it. Then came the light. Being so different from me, I got my first sense of individuality, and all satisfaction disappeared. Tell me, little one. Tell me what I am.
The Darkness.
Balance-- something we've never tried before-- creation and destruction, light and dark, brother and sister united again, but on behalf of one world-- this world. True balance. The way it was always meant to be.
The Darkness to God.
I thought revenge would make me happy. But I was wrong. What you've made... it's beautiful. It took me a long time to see that.
The Darkness to God.
The Earth was formless and void, and Darkness was over the surface of the deep. Then God said, "Let there be light." And there was light, and God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the Darkness. And the Darkness? The Darkness resented it, and so bitterness and spite were born before time itself.

Trivia

  • The terrible battle between God and the Darkness seems to fit with the first day of creation in Genesis. "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness." It is possible that the "light" he created was himself, and him he separating the "light" and "dark" was Him locking away the Darkness.
  • She has been compared with the Greek Gods Erebus and Nyx, Roman Gods Scotus and Nox, Primordial Void Khaos, Lovecraftian Azathoth and Nyarlathotep, Egyptian God Nun and the Evil God Angra Mainyu.
  • Out of Pre-existential, The Darkness is the most fine with humans (aside from God). She even kissed one.
