Baal Saphon (Zephon) was a title of the Ugaritic god Hadad, related to the belief that Mount Hermon (known as Saphon in Ugarit) was his sacred site. Prayers frequently invoked Baal to send divine aid from the summit of Mount Saphon.
In Hellenic times Baal Saphon was assimilated into the cult of Zeus Kasios, an aspect of Zeus regarded as the god of Mount Aqraa.
In the Old Testament Zaphon is mentioned in the Book of Exodus, as a place for that the Israelites to hide to save them from the Pharaoh.
“ | the Egyptians gave chase to them, and all the chariot horses of Pharaoh, his riders, and his warriors overtook them encamped by the sea, near Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon. | „ |
